AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Could you please explain the difference between desire and aspiration in spiritual life when you have time? If one says, “I desire liberation from the cycle of birth and death,” versus “I aspire for Moksha,” are they not pointing to the same thing, or does an essential inner distinction separate them? 🔥🕊️🙏🏻

Desire is a vital movement. Its seat is in the prana and hence it cannot sustain long. It tends to dwindle if the results are not coming. It is for this reason that Sri Krishna advices the practice of nishkama karma and equanimity first. Once the desires are quietened, then the true aspiration is born, the real Agni of the Vedas. This aspiration rises upwards, drawn by an irresistible attraction for the Divine in a state of complete faith and surrender. Desire demands and keeps a transactional relation with the Divine; sometimes even Moksha becomes a demand eagerly and impatiently sought after by the force of desire. Aspiration is intense but full of self-giving. It seeks the Divine for the sake of the Divine, not for what it may get out of Him, simply for the joy of the Divine, not even for Moksha or anything else.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

I am grateful for your guidance in this situation. Alok da, I feel that remaining silent, offering the hurt to the Divine, and praying for peace within myself and others would be easier for me.  But I have one doubt: what if the other person interprets my silence as weakness and continues to hurt or insult me? 🕊️🛡️🌿🙏🏻[…]

Those who indulge in hurting others are already hurtling downwards. They will continue to do what they are habituated to doing. Leave them to their destiny. By getting into a retaliatory fight with them you would only hurt yourself by delaying your journey and gravitating downwards towards them. Take their insults as …
