Attachment to works is because of the results we want or expect from it. The result may be gross, such as money, or subtle such as recognition. Either way, it binds and deflects us from the true purpose of works which is, first, to grow and evolve towards the Divine. Secondly, when one has grown into the Divine, then its purpose is to fulfil the Divine Will upon earth. Individually, it means becoming a channel and instrument of the Divine.
To arrive at this freedom, one should first get rid of the desire for certain results. This is the very basis for freedom in works. It means that one does the work well but does it only as an offering to the Divine, leaving the results entirely in the hands of the Divine. It means the practice of inner equanimity in gain or loss, success or failure, victory or defeat, praise or insult. If one can do this, then one not only gets freedom in works but also the delight through work.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
