AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

So much is spoken about unconditional love as an antidote to selfish love. What are the qualities of such a love and what are some practical ways of showing such a loveπŸ’“?

Yes there is a lot of talk of these things nowadays such as unconditional love, non judgmental, no expectations, non duality, back to nature which is a sign that the mind is straining towards something which it cannot really understand, let alone put in practice. Unconditional love cannot be practiced in the real sense without the psychic touch. It means loving someone from the core and to the core bypassing all other layers that bring up reactions of likes and dislikes. It is only the psychic that can love this way, for it means loving the divine element in the other person for the joy of loving with no expectation of return. It implies that one continues to love even if the other person hates and scorns.

Unselfish love is easier. It is the love that is of a higher quality, of the higher vital or the true vital. It is love that is full of the movement of giving expecting nothing in return, certainly not for any selfish mptive. It is generally possible in generous natures and a vital that is of a higher quality. But this is not something that can be inculcated. It is constitutional.  On the other hand unconditional love spontaneously emerges as we grow closer and closer to the Divine in the heart through the psychic door.

Short of this one can use the discerning mind to detect and get rid of desires and expectations because these things are not conducive to a higher life. The buddhi then acts as an intermediary to purify the movement of love and remove the dross of personal desire from it. However most do not undertake the trouble. They simply shut the doors to love for fear of contamination by desires and expectations.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
