Both are permitted. One can take up more than one mantra provided their deities and function do not clash with each other. Universally accepted mantras such as Om, Gayatri mantra, verses of the Gita as well as the Upanishads can be taken up together. The stricter rules apply mainly to tantric and beej mantras given by a Master.
