The first step is to tame them by bringing these two fellows under the control of the discerning intellect. It is what the Mother calls as being reasonable. It means to exercise moderation, to restraint impulses and passions by a sort of mental control, to cultivate patience and discipline these parts by teaching them not to rush into action or leap at appearances at the least knock of the senses. They have to be explained again and again like recalcitrant children. It is only after the vital and the physical have been trained by the reason and brought under the mind’s control that they are ready to surrender to the Divine.
Affectionately,
