I am sure you have tried explaining it to him. Address his concerns and fears rather than explaining your reasons. Possibly there are some unconscious fears that need to be addressed. May be a third person whom he trusts can talk to him face to face. Meanwhile you should try to find ocassions when he is with you while his mom is away. This will help.
