There are three things you can do.
1) Pray to the Divine Mother for help and then sincerely pray to the spirit of the species that they leave the house as it creates lot of disturbance.
2) Use the trap. But this is often clumsy as one has to keep throwing them away. Better to see their entry points and seal it.
3) You can try first with a gentle use of the poison, enough to make a Mouse fall sick. They are fast learners and the message goes to the entire community not to try the stuff as it makes them ill.
If nothing works then killing is the last option but usually a combination of these methods works.
Of course make sure that the kitchen is clean and any grass and weeds outside the house is kept trimmed.
