AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

I have picked some paras from what you shared with me. “I said that between the age of eighteen and twenty I had attained a conscious and constant union with the divine Presence and that I had done it all alone, with absolutely nobody to help me, not even books, you understand! When I found one—here came to my hands a little later Vivekananda’s Raja Yoga—it seemed to me so wonderful a thing, you see, that someone could explain something to me. This made me gain in a few months what would have perhaps taken me years to do.”🕊️🤍♾️🌏

“The first time I knew—and nobody told me this, I knew it by experience—the first time I knew that there was a discovery to make within me, well, that was the most important thing. This had to be put before everything. And when I found, as I said, a book, a man, just to give me a little indication, to tell me, “Here you are. If you do this the path will open before you”, why, I rushed headlong like a… like a cyclone, and nothing could have stopped me.”

What I understand from here that the Mother was not fully aware of her true self from her childhood and later realised it. But somewhere I read that Sri Aurobindo told “Mirra was born free”.

So is my understanding is correct that Mother has not a conscious birth like Sri Krishna?

Here is Sri Aurobindo’s letter that, in a way, explains the birth and life, not only of The Mother but of all Avatars.

There are many who hold the view that she was human but now embodies the Divine Mother and her “Prayers”, they say, explain this view. But, to my mental conception, to my psychic being, she is the Divine Mother who has consented to put on her the cloak of obscurity and suffering and ignorance so that she can effectively lead us—human beings—to Knowledge and Bliss and Ananda and to the Supreme Lord.

The Divine puts on an appearance of humanity, assumes the outward human nature in order to tread the path and show it to human beings, but does not cease to be the Divine. It is a manifestation that takes place, a manifestation of a growing divine consciousness, not human turning into divine. The Mother was inwardly above the human even in childhood, so the view held by “many” is erroneous.

I also conceive that the Mother’s “Prayers” are meant to show us—the aspiring psychic—how to pray to the Divine.

Yes.

All the Avataras have gone through this process. Sri Rama had all the signs of lord Vishnu from his childhood and yet he had to go through the formal process of initiation under Rishi Vasistha. Sri Krishna was not only conscious but there are even stories of his moracles from childhood indicating extraordinary powers. Yet he took formal initiation into Yoga from Rishi Ghora as recounted in the Chandogya Upanishad. He had to undergo all kinds of physical and intellectual training with guru Sandipani. Nor did he display his extraordinary powers in every circumstance. Buddha and Christ also showed the signs of being a divine being and yet both engaged in tapasya and inner struggle to realise the truth. So too The Mother conscious of who She was had to go through the process needed for the full manifestation of Her Godhead.

The reason is very simple. Think of a child who is conscious of what he wants to do in life, is also conscious of where he has come from must yet undergo the training and the discipline needed to fulfil his mission. It is because though inwardly conscious, the outward instrument need to develop and the bridge has to be made between the outer and the inner before the work can be undertaken. With the Mother it was additionally, to open the path for others, to show the way by personal example, and, to do the sadhana for the earth consciousness having assumed an earthly body.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
