Taking the simpler route does help in reaching the Divine faster. It is the narrower path. On the other hand, a wider path that takes into account the diverse elements of life and lifts them all towards the Divine leads to a more complete realisation. It depends upon the Divine Will within and the destiny of the individual soul as to which of these two paths it takes. In any case all the difficulties one faces in the spiritual journey primarily lie within.
Social conventions are a different thing. They have little to do with the spiritual journey. The spiritual journey begins with individual aspiration. One may be socially and morally good and yet not yet touched by the spiritual aspiration. In fact very often it keeps the individual satisfied and therefore tied to the life of ignorance whereas spiritual life means obeying nothing and nobody else except the Divine.
