This story was told to me (and many others) by Sri Chottenarayan Sharma, a renowned and revered scholar of Sri Aurobindo who was deeply conversant with many scriptures. He had a phenomenal memory, profound occult experiences and had traveled widely.

The verification of this event comes in a casual conversation with Sri Aurobindo in one of the evening talks. Of course, the name of the yogi is not taken there.

Wikipedia pages do not generally document these things, which are often passed off as casual conversations. Bama Khepa ji left his body in 1911. Sri Aurobindo was a rising star on the Indian Revolutionary Scene. Perhaps this question must have been asked in 1909 after the Uttarpara Speech.
